Landing on the moon is one thing, but playing a rocking set on the moon is another feat altogether! Three bandmates must race across a crater-spanning city to make it to their gig on time.
Creator, Writer, Director
Alejandro is a 24-year-old director and writer born and based in Miami. He graduated from University of Florida with a bachelors in Electronic Video Production. His thesis short, a 10-minute female-led comedy, screened at the Miami Film Festival’s Cinemaslam showcase. After graduation he was selected to be a part of The Gotham’s (Formerly Independent Filmmaker Project) Gotham EDU professional development course summer 2022.
To Alejandro, Moon Rocks is a heartwarming and fun expression of the uncertainty of young adulthood, as well as a celebration of community.
Lead Animator, Artistic Director
Milagros Lopez-Medina is a graduate from the University of Florida with a degree in Digital Arts and Sciences. She is the Art Director and co-creator of the production, ‘Moon Rocks’. Her background is in Animation and illustration, and her interests include Martial Arts, Animal Crossing, and learning new languages.
Her passion in animation led her to reach out to Alejandro to collaborate on a story together. She believes that together they can create a whole world full of intriguing characters exploring odd situations.
Producer
Laura San Juan is a Miami-based producer, particularly drawn to Florida-based films for their rich cultural diversity and storytelling potential. She is inspired by her environment to narratives that challenge society and push for change. This mission has been carried out not only in the films she produces, but also through partnering with organizations. During her time at FEM Films while at the University of Florida, she led the diverse and female-driven organization that set a platform for underrepresented student filmmakers. This experience led her to participate in THE GOTHAM FILM & MEDIA INSTITUTE SUMMER 2022 EDUCATION PROGRAM, where she began professionally collaborating with Alejandro.
Her produced work has graced screenings at Miami Film Festival 2023-2024, Outshine Film Festival 2024, and Frameline 2024. Laura currently serves as Creative Coordinator at Hogwash Studios.
Andrea is the lead guitarist and manager of the band. She’s Scrim’s sister, and they are polar opposites. Coming from an engineering background in school, she’s used to a rigid cause and effect that is difficult to achieve in a music career on the best of days. She performs with a third robotic arm strapped to her waist which has a life of its own. Rules and institutions are her comfort zone. In her perfect world, some big agent sees their show and signs them to some predatory yet consistent contract.
Scrim has a punk attitude in her daily life, hostile to authority and difficult to contain. She is technologically savvy, but in the disruptive, open-source way. She is as intelligent as she is lazy, and will find any creative solution to get what she wants with minimal effort. Or convince herself she didn’t want it in the first place. She wants to spread her punk message across the Solar System. Or whomever is within earshot.
Bubbles is the youngest of the three, taking a sabbatical from her communications degree to tour with the band. She’s so naturally talented that she has a hard time understanding why others have so much difficulty pursuing their dreams. Bubbles is a nickname given to her when she broke a beaker in a science class as a teen, filling the classroom with bubbles. Her self-esteem is so high she reclaimed her own nickname. Being so young and gifted she’s pretty naive and assumes that things will turn out in her favor no matter what she does.
The human race can build a city on the moon but pairing your Bluetooth headphones to your devices is still hit-or-miss. New technology means new problems that the bandmates will have to deal with. The city is located on a crater on the South pole of the Moon, in near permanent daylight. The inside of the crater in permanent shadow. Moon Rocks takes inspiration from real-world science like NASA's ongoing Artemis Program, which aims to pave the way for human settlement on Shackleton Crater on the Moon's South pole.
